Sir Louis Dane first discovered this high pass trek in 1884 as entry point to Spiti from Parvati valley in Kullu (Himachal Pradesh). It involves very long journey beyond habitation. This cold desert valley with its snowy crags, cliff and crevasses, jagged rocks and other fossils make Pin valley a unique geological lab. Its also known as valley of flowers trek. The area is characterised by abundant alpine flowers and rocky outcrops glittering with mica.
